Child development milestones โ physical, language, cognitive, and social โ are helpful guides for parents. While all children develop at their own pace, significant delays warrant early evaluation.
Developmental milestones are behaviours or physical skills typically achieved within a certain age range by most children. They span four domains: gross motor (large muscle movements like rolling, sitting, walking), fine motor (small movements like grasping and drawing), speech and language, and social/emotional development.
Milestones are guidelines, not rigid rules โ there is a wide range of 'normal'. A child walking at 18 months is within normal range, as is a child walking at 10 months. However, when children are significantly outside the typical range, early evaluation and intervention can make a substantial difference.
Key milestones: 2 months: smiles socially, lifts head briefly. 4 months: holds head steadily, tracks objects, makes sounds. 6 months: rolls over, sits with support, transfers objects hand to hand. 9 months: sits without support, crawls, babbles (mama, dada). 12 months: pulls to stand, cruises, 1โ3 words, waves. 18 months: walks independently, 10โ20 words, follows simple commands. 2 years: runs, 50+ words, 2-word phrases ('more milk', 'daddy go'). 3 years: climbs stairs, 200+ words, strangers can understand 75% of speech. 4 years: hops, uses 4โ5-word sentences. 5 years: skips, writes name, engages in complex play.
In Korea, child development monitoring is part of the National Health Screening Program for Infants and Children, run through NHIS and delivered at designated paediatric clinics. Children are assessed at regular intervals from birth through age 6. Concerns should be raised at any of these visits.
Early intervention matters enormously. Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy services are available through community health centres, major hospitals, and private therapy centres in Seoul.
